When placing a carbon monoxide (CO) detector in your kitchen, it’s important to position it away from fuel-burning appliances like gas stoves or ovens to avoid false alarms. The detector should be installed at least 15–20 feet away from the stove, but still within the kitchen area to detect any carbon monoxide that may accumulate. Avoid placing the detector near vents, windows, or doors, as drafts can interfere with its ability to accurately detect CO. Since carbon monoxide disperses evenly, the detector can be placed at mid-level height, about 5 feet off the ground, or according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. If you have a combination smoke and CO detector, it should be installed on or near the ceiling, following smoke detector guidelines. Placing the detector in the right spot ensures that it effectively monitors for CO while minimizing the chances of false alarms.
